Bless the ppeole at the Fauna Sanctuary for what they are doing to help. I’m not sure I could read the book. It sounds very disturbing. But I will visit their site.

It's wonderfull what you are doing for the chimps. I can just imagine the heartbrake that goes with it, but the love of doing this overcomes all heartaches. Well done debbie. One day if my wife, boy and myself are in the position to do such a deed for life I would not even think twice to pack up and go. There should be more poeple like you.

Sadly during the Christmastime there was a fire at Tchimpounga and many of the enclosures were burnt down. They desperately need support to rebuild the sanctuary. I think its really bad luck but hopefully enough people will donate and they can have even better places to sleep and play when not outside. And obviously the older chimps will be too strong to just let roam so they will be struggling until they get money to rebuild and put things right. The sooner it happens the better.
Anyone who finds this article can see how adorable chimps are and how much these orphans need our help.

I think Lemba's gaze tells it all. You can't refuse to help the chimp people. I would love to go to Tchimpounga and see all the beautiful chimps.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for your moving and riveting biography of the chimps of Fauna Sanctuary. As I read I so wanted to see the space where they lived. So thank you also for the lovely video clip on your site showing the chimps and their sanctuary environment. I learned a great deal from your book and could not help thinking about how these animals cope with their frustrations by throwing themselves around while we humans often get sedentary and withdrawn. The result in humans is the connective tissue gets stuck and matted, body movement diminishes, ageing moves forward as stiffness and a shuffling gait. The chimps seem to keep their graceful and effortless movement even as they suffer psychologically and organically from their histories. Many thanks in so many ways for your wonderful book. Dianne

Nebina, thank you so much for writing. Your story about looking into your cat's eyes is lovely, and shows that we all have these breakthrough moments with animals, whether you're running a sanctuary for embattled chimps or simply living your life and giving a home to a kitty named Kristy. I'm very happy to hear my book had an impact on you.
All the best,
ADW

Hey Andrew,

I am almost done your book on the chimps at Fauna. I received this book in a funny way. I went to a book exchange at the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) taking along with me a book on First Nations treaty making in British Columbia. I thought to myself, well it isn't a real turn pager, but maybe I can exchange it for an interesting book.

The exchange game went on and I finally convinced the head librarian at VPL to exchange her book with me. We all had to go up to a mic and 'sell' our book, she said that she 'had to' read your book because (I can't remember) she had to interview you or write on it...anyway, she ended up falling in love with it and just could not stop telling us how insightful and impactful the book was.

And so here I am, almost done, reading on my way back home on the Skytrain. Your words have brought tears to my eyes (I just could not bear reading what we have done, I am so ashamed at times to be human) and at the same time, I have burst out laughing on the bus (couldn't hold it in any longer) reading over 'Operation Cucarachas'. Each night, I find myself coming home and babbling non-stop about the book, i.e. Tom and how he cleaned and took care of his own wound and how smart Yoko is for doing what I do all the time, that is pour cold tap water into my boiling cup of tea. After reading about Mario staring into the eyes of Jeannie (was that her name?) for hours, I came home and laid down with Kristy (my kitty cat) and stared into her eyes for an hour, she was perplexed and entertained, as if I had lost it. She stared right back at me so deeply and we began dozing off together.

Thank you so much Andrew for putting your heart and soul into this book. You are truly a phenomenal writer. Congrats on being listed and short listed on all the various reading and awards lists.

Sincerely,

Neblina
